SIGNIFICANT ABSENCE
Abstract
Photographing the city pertains to photo-graphing architectural features, historic sites, streets, crowds, signs, the underground, crime, entertainment, recreational facilities, ruins, traces, and space. City, on the other hand, pertains to residential space that is de-stroyed and reconstructed at certain turning points due to economic, cultural, architectural, and demographic reasons. This study will attempt to examine the photographer as the subject as well as the boundaries of her photo-graphic designations in the face of urban renewal through sample projects. Also functioning as a part of the memory industry, which has been formed during the last half-century that simultaneously witnessed memory loss and memory boom, photography, albeit through certain projects, has proven the possibility of a critical gaze at social and individual testimonials. When Eugene Atget's photos of the old Paris which he took between 1898-1924 out of commercial concerns is viewed as a milestone, Antoine D'Agata's Psychogeographie (2005) and other similar projects can be said to not only docu-ment urban change and transformation but also act as intermediaries of defiance against separation from the accustomed living areas.
